Chapter Thirty-Nine

The three-wheeler hovers above the hill, hidden by magic and the descending night. I fumble with my phone, willing my hands to stop shaking. That’s just what I need. To drop my phone from this height.

I call Blake. It goes straight to voice message. “Blake, it’s a trap. Don’t go to The Teacake Factory,” I shout over the wind.

“Think he’ll get the message?” Squeaks asks.

“Probably not.”

“Dagnabbit. I kinda liked demon dude.”

“He’s not dead yet.”

“Mr. Killer is gonna make sure he is. Might as well give up and go home. Plan the funeral.”

“Did I ever mention that you are a terrible familiar?”

“Yeah, but it ain’t true. So whatcha gonna do?”

“Rescue Blake.”

“Groovy. Wait, what’s happenin’ with the monster bike?”

I don’t answer but tip the three-wheeler downward. Mr. Smirnov has parked the van a distance from the factory and is jogging into the forest. Probably finding a good location for a kill shot.

One elegant solution to our two problems. Isn’t that what Mr. Pinocchio said? Get rid of the competition. Distract the bounty hunter. But Mr. Pinocchio didn’t actually mean distract. He meant dispatch.

And the authorities will blame it on a power struggle between rival drug gangs, or something like that.

Strands of hair tug free from my ponytail as the three-wheeler speeds up. We’re at a sharp angle, aiming straight for the parking lot at the back of The Teacake Factory. My ears pop.

“I ain’t ready to die! Dear God, I believe in you now. Please make it stop!”

I grit my teeth and focus on not crash landing. We’re approaching the ground at a reckless speed. I pull at the handlebars. The three-wheeler is heavy, reluctant to follow my directions. Maybe it has a death wish. I pull harder.

The back wheels hit the cracked tarmac, bounce and skid. I bite my tongue as my jaw snaps shut. Squeaks digs his nails into my skin, probably drawing blood. We roll to a stop next to the new chain-link fence.

“You’re definitely the worst driver ever,” Squeak says.

I glance around, wondering where the security guards are. Magic can only hide us so far. It’s difficult to miss a giant three-wheeler landing in a parking lot. But so far, the Invisibility Spell seems to hold. Nobody comes running out of the factory, guns blazing or whatever drug-dealing security guards do when they see a woman, a bat and a mutated tricycle.

I slide off the three-wheeler and stare at my hands. “I think we’re still invisible.”

“Groovy. Now let’s find demon dude and get outta here. Place gives me the creeps. Worse than your driving.”

“My driving isn’t creepy.”

“True. It’s downright terrifying.”

I dash toward the back door of the factory. It’s locked. Of course it’s locked.

“Fang, please,” I hold up a finger in front of Squeaks’ muzzle.

“The things I do for my witch.” He opens his mouth.

I scratch my finger and smear a drop of blood on the lock. Under my breath, I whisper my Unlock Lock spell.

Double, double toil and trouble.

Lock pop, and doorway bubble.

The lock opens with a sharp snick.
